CSB Mens - Round 2 Recap

Men

The CSB Mens season got underway in style over the weekend, with some strong team efforts coinciding with individual moments of brilliance.

In Championship Division, Bentleigh and Mordialloc, aided by their respective debutants, surged past their opponents to claim resounding Round 1 victories. Bonbeach and South Caulfield rounded out the winners list, both with strong wins against competitive opposition.

Bentleigh hosted Carnegie making, light work of their opponents, steamrolling them for 73 in the first innings. The Demons weren’t troubled in their chase, losing just the one wicket in 19 overs to finish the days play with the bonus point.

As far as CSB debuts go, it would be hard to top the performance of Om Satija. On debut for the Bentleigh Cricket Club, the leg spinner took an astonishing 6/7 off 5.1 to bring Carnegies innings crashing to an end. Without much to chase, Ciccarella was the best with Bat in hand, top scoring for the match with a sturdy 38* to steer the demons to their round 1 win.

Things started shaky for the Bonbeach Sharks, with Skipper Tom Smith dismissed early courtesy of Beaumaris pacemen Ben Earney. After stumbling to 4/40 the Sharks managed to fight their way to a defendable total of 183, thanks to an experienced knock from Dan Mueller (64 off 66). This knock proved match winning, as Beaumaris fell short of their target, posting 9/161 from their allotted 40 overs.

4/23 is not an ideal start to a run chase, as the target of 184 slipped away in the early overs thanks to a damaging new ball spell by club debutant Harley Dale (4/29 off 8). Chris Hall (62 off 77) and Jonathan Leadbeater (38 off 76) showed class in their 95 run stand, but the damage was done as it proved too hard to play catchup.

Mordialloc hit the ground running with a strong win in their return to the top tier, edging out Hampton on their home turf. First game nerves seemed non existent in Championship Division this week, with another debutant stealing the show with a dominant individual performance.

Star recruit Chamindu Mathra seemed a class above, finishing unbeaten on 116 to help the Bloodhounds post a total of 223. Ryan Morris started his season strongly with a contribution of 47. 223 was more than enough, with the seahorses all out for 165 in the 38th over, despite the best efforts of opener Will Bowden, opening his season with a half century.

At Princes Park, South Caulfield began their premiership defence with a controlled win against a competitive Murrumbeena.

Murrumbeena didn’t start the season how they would’ve liked, slumping to 3/5. Hardham (56 off 74) and Kruger (59 off 75) fought the Beena back to a defendable position, as they have done many times over the last few years. Lachlan Mahon was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, finishing with 4/39 off 8, bagging the prized wicket of Kruger at a pivotal moment in the visitors innings.

South Cauilfield stumbled their way to 4/74, and didn’t look back, with an unbeaten 112 fifth wicket partnership between Russell (66* off 98) and Alvitigala (62* off 52) sealing the round 1 victory with 17 balls and 6 wickets to spare.

In Division 1, a new look Mckinnon proved far too strong for an underwhelming Clayton District. The Clays only managed to post 123 in the first innings, as they struggled to build partnerships from start to finish. The Heat only lost 1 wicket in their chase, with newcomer Jack O’Shea finishing the match with an unbeaten 68 to go with his 2/20 off 8.

Dingley edged out Brighton District in a run fest, chasing down 251 in the last over with only the one wicket in hand. Oldfield (78) and Lasky (43) put on 104 for the first wicket, laying the foundations for what would’ve been a winning score in all other matches this week. Dingley mounted an incredible chase, cornerstoned by a blistering innings from opener Bevin Corneille (65 off 36).

In perhaps the biggest upset of the Round, Parkdale United defeated Parkdale in what was a high scoring, entertaining affair. Opener Ryan Stringer led the Pythons to victory with an unbeaten 65*, chasing down the two blues 186 with 1 wicket in hand.

Mentone started their 2021/22 campaign as expected, securing the points in a comfortable win over St Brigids St Louis. The saints, fielding a side full of youth, looked heavily outmatched in comparison to the premiership favorites. The Tigers chased the target of 139, 4 wickets down with 9 overs to spare. Simon Cormie (54 off 82) and recruit Darcy Brown (2/6 off 8) starred for the victors.
