CSB Womens - Round 1 Recap
After two weeks of Grading matches, the Cricket Southern Bayside Women’s Competition got underway in style over the weekend.
With close finishes, new faces, new clubs and individual highlights, its great to have the CSBW back in action for 2021/22!
Following the grading round robins, the competition has been split into three divisions, and with a total of 23 teams, the depth within each individual grade will be at its highest since forming.
Kicking things off in Division 1, Bentleigh followed on from their strong grading matches to record the rounds biggest victory, while Richmond City and Parkdale joined them in the winners column with strong performances of their own.
Bentleigh hosted East Malvern Tooronga and managed to restrict the visitors to just 5/81 off their 20 overs, thanks to all round tight team bowling. Everyone who was given an opportunity with the ball restricted the batters, with wickets spread evenly throughout the team.
In response, the Demons made light work of the chase, reaching the target in the 15th over only 1 wicket down. Louise Adams (22 off 21) and Carol Handtke (14 off 19) were the strongest with the bat and led the team to a resounding first up victory.
Last years runners up, Richmond City, have started with a well fought out win against Old Haileybury. Old Haileybury posted a strong total off the back of great innings from skipper Megan Loprogge (33 off 28) and Stephanie Barnett (33* off 22), reaching 114 at the end of their allotted overs. The Tigers would’ve been looking at a much larger chase if it wasn’t for the exceptional bowling of Xanthe Botha, finishing with 4/12 off her 4 overs.
Old Haileybury took the game right to the wire, but the Tigers were able to secure the victory with one over to spare. Stumbling to 5/29, Richmond City were able to mount a lower order fight back led by Tiffany Fowler (26* off 31) and Stephanie Topp (24* off 26) who finished up unbeaten to steer their team over the line.
Carnegie hosted Parkdale in a rematch of last years Elimination Semi Final, a match that saw Parkdale earn a spot in the Grand Final they would later win.
Batting first, Carnegie were able to reach a total of 7/106 through the hard work of opener Ella Maitland (32 off 28) and Aimee White (20 off 21). Parkdale skipper Ella Oliver was able to take late wickets to stem the flow of runs at the end of Carnegies innings, finishing with 3/7 off her two overs.
In another thrilling contest, Parkdale were able to chase the total in the last over, finishing on 108 and winning the match by 5 wickets. The captain again features in the highlights, with a rock solid 17* off 24 balls, assisted by Ando Aparo (16 off 15) and Ollie Leighton (14 off 22) who both finished undismissed.
In Division 2, Richmond Union started their 2021/22 campaign with a commanding win over the Bonbeach Sharks, in an encouraging performance with contributors across the board. The tigers finished their innings at 1/133, with 6 batters reaching double figures and finishing the innings as not out. Elizabeth Haberfield (27* off 21) top scored, closely followed by Jane Stevens (20* off 23) and Phoebe Bullock (20* off 25).
In reply the Sharks could only muster up 6/80, with Sarah Gales top scoring on 12. Mary Evans was the pick of the bowlers for the victors, picking up 2/14 off 3 overs.
In a closer affair, Omega were able to hold off Richmond City 2 in a see-sawing contest at Bricker Reserve.
Batting first Omega were restricted well by the tigers, held to 6/95 off their 20 overs. Things were looking ominous for the home side, until Jordon Cooper (33* off 29) was able steady the ship and get her team to a defendable total.
In response the Tigers were able to push the home side right to the end, but ultimately falling short finishing 5/89. Tanvi Talwar (13*) top scored for the visitors, who were helped in their chase by extras.
In the performance of the round, East Sandringham were able to reach a monstrous total of 0/178 in their contest against Mackie.
Mackie were then restricted to just 97 in response, to fall short by 81 runs. While the result didn’t go their way this round, Mackie still had strong performers in Brianna Grant (22* off 20), and Lori Lygris (14* off 16), who both batted well against a strong bowling lineup.
East Malvern Tooronga 2 rounded out the Division 2 winners list, with a 10-wicket victory over Cluden at home.
Batting first, Cluden were dismissed in the last over of their innings for 79. Jessica Dale (22* off 44) and Jessie Pham (18 off 20) highlighted their teams’ innings, while Daniella Viney was the best with the ball, taking 2/2 off 3.3 overs and claiming the final wicket of the oppositions innings.
East Malvern Tooronga 2 chased with class, reaching the target for the loss of no wickets. Belinda Bowey led the way, top scoring with a fast paced 38* off just 18 balls. Daniella Viney (27* off 25) and Valerie Mag (13* off 25) also batted well to secure their team the first-round win.
