Bentleigh Make it Four-From-Four While Glen Waverly Hit the Ground Running - CSBW Round 2 Recap

Round 2 of the Cricket Southern Bayside Women’s competition picked up right where Round 1 left off, as Parkdale, East Sandringham and CUCC Kings emerge as the divisional leaders moving into Round 3.

In Division 1, Carnegie immediately bounced back from last week’s loss to record a comfortable victory over Old Haileybury at home.

Winning the toss and batting, Carnegie were able to post a winning score of 4/156 off their 20 overs. Captain Susie Condron led from the front, finishing unbeaten on 46* off just 22 balls. Aimee White (23 off 16) and Penny Callaghan (17 off 14) also contributed with the bat.

In reply, Old Haileybury struggled to get going and fell well short of the target, despite the best efforts of Sheridan Ersch (21 off 39) and Laura Rabinovich (24 off 23). Aimee White was the pick of the bowlers for the match, taking 4/13 off 4 overs.

Parkdale made it two-from-two with a win over East Malvern Tooronga in a dominant win away from home.

Coming off a strong Round 1 Victory and sent in to bat by EMT, Parkdale put the runs on the board, finishing their innings 4/162 off 20 overs. Four out of the top five entered the 20’s, with Ella Oliver (24* off 22) and Gemma Mackay (28* off 22) top scoring for the visitors.

Parkdale’s bowling depth proved too much for East Malvern Tooronga, who finished their innings 5/89. Kim Thomson (16* off 23) and Arianna Walley (16* off 23) were both solid early, while Hayley Grange (2/10 off 4) was best with the ball.

Bentleigh were able to continue their hot streak, with another all-round team performance getting them the points against Richmond City.

Sent in to bat, the tigers were dismissed all out for 90 in the 14th over. Sonia Sachdev (29 off 22) provided a spark at the top of the order, but the home side struggled to get away from the tight Bentleigh bowling. Louise Adams (3/28 off 4) and Shreenu Bhaskar (2/12 off 3) both picked up multiple wickets.

In response, the Demons were in complete control of the match, chasing the target down in the 16th over for a five-wicket win. Louise Adams peeled off a classy 32 to go alongside her three wickets (and a run out), with Shreenu Bhaskar (15*), Sarah Mullane (14*) and Carolyn Ellul (12*) all hitting double figures to help get the visitors over the line with plenty of time to spare.

In Division 2, East Sandringham finished the second round as the only team sitting on two wins, with Glen Waverly hot on their tails after their first match in the CSBW.

Bonbeach hit the winners list for the first time this season, with a thrilling win over East Malvern Tooronga at Shark Park.

Batting first, EMT were able to control their innings well, only losing the two wickets to post a total of 2/109 after their 20 overs. Belinda Bowey backed up her Round 1 performance, top scoring again with 32* off 25 balls. Wickets were hard to come by for the Sharks, but they were able to bowl well to restrict EMT to 109.

In response, Bonbeach took things down to wire, winning the match in the last over to secure a four-wicket win. Sarah Gales (35) and Elyse Congues (22) top scored for the Sharks, with Valerie Mag (2/25 off 4) the only multiple wicket taker for the match.

In another thrilling contest, Richmond City defeated Richmond Union in the final over, taking out the first local derby of the season.

Batting first, Richmond Union fought hard to set a strong target for their opponents, finishing their innings 7/100. Elizabeth Haberfield (29 off 24) led the way for the home side, closely supported by Maggie Phillip (18* off 34).

Richmond City got away to a strong start in their chase but were put under immense pressure in the middle order, losing 4/10 to bring the game back to a level playing field. With her team in trouble, Tanvi Talwar (31* off 29) was able to execute a true Captains knock, getting the team over the line with a superb unbeaten innings. Phoebe Bullock (2/23 off 4) and Mary Evans (2/21 off 4) both performed brilliantly with the ball.

Glen Waverly hit the ground running in their CSBW with a nine-wicket victory over last years Division 3 Premiers Mackie.

Sent in to bat by Glen Waverly, Mackie grinded their innings out to reach 6/79 off 20 overs. Glen Waverley’s bowling unit was spearheaded by two junior players, in what was an extremely promising display of talent. Prisha Patel (2/8 off 4) and Simrah Shaikh (4/4 off 4) gave the Mackie batters no room to move, restricting the runs and taking wickets to make things even more difficult.

In response, Glen Waverly made light work of the chase, reaching the target one wicket down and with 6 overs to spare. A commanding entry to the competition. Madhumitha Mallichetty (18) and Jessica Connaughton (18*) both featured in the runs.

Rounding out the winners list for the week, East Sandringham continued from their dominant Round 1 win to defeat Cluden by eight-wickets.

Batting first, Cluden were restricted to 4/108 off their 20 overs, with Jess Bustin the pick of the bowlers with 2/16 off 4.

In response, the Zebras reached their target two wickets down and with a couple of overs to spare, recording another comfortable win to edge further ahead on the ladder with a healthy percentage. Georgia Francese (26) and Alison Hunt-Sturman (23*) starred with the bat.
