Bentleigh back on track - CSB Mens Round 8 Recap

Men

Bentleigh re-join the Championship Division finals chase with a commanding win over ladder leaders South Caulfield, bouncing back from last week’s disappointing loss to Hampton.

Winning the toss and batting, Bentleigh were able to put batting woes from recent weeks behind them to post a total of 9/184. Buckley (58), who has been in superb form of late, top scored for the Demons, supported by openers Dowling (21) and Mott (23). Mildenhall snared four wickets for the home side, finishing with figures of 4/38 off 7.

South Caulfield have chased to perfection all season, but were unable to execute on the weekend, with the fired-up Demons out to prove a point. South were dismissed for 136 in the 35th over, with Mildenhall (25) and Bradley (20) the top scorers. Satija was able to recapture his early season form to pick up 4/35 off 7.5, with Mott and Drew contributing with two-apiece.

The Demons win came with a bonus point, a welcomed commodity at this stage of the season.

Mordialloc defeated Bonbeach at Shark Park to move one game clear of them in the race to the finals, and the all-important double chance.

Sent into bat Mordialloc posted a total of 8/192, spearheaded by star player Chamindu Mathra, who notched up his second century of the season. The Bloodhounds lost two early wickets, before a 96 run partnership between Mathra (104) and Tyrone (34) steadied the ship.

Bonbeach openers Gales (54) and Plom (39) started the chase strongly, but the loss of wickets in clumps stemmed the flow of runs for the Sharks, ultimately running out of time and finishing their innings 7/165 off their 40 overs. Iqbal was the pick of the bowlers for the Bloodhounds, finishing with 3/28 off 7, including the important wickets of Gales and Mueller.

Carnegie hit the winners list for the first time this season, defeating Hampton at Boss James Reserve.

Carnegie needed to get off to a strong start, and their top order batters delivered. Tripathi (84) batted brilliantly, leading from the front, and was supported by fellow opener Srivastava (38) and Kotha (24). Carnegie posted a total of 8/215, finally giving themselves a good chance with the ball.

In response, the Seahorse chase was led by Jarrod Munday, who finished with 82* off 99 balls. Munday lacked support in the middle-lower order, as the home side crumbled all out for 172 after 38 overs. Reddycharla (3/32 off 8) and Brahmbhatt (3/24 off 7) were the most damaging with the ball.

Murrumbeena jumps in to the top four with an important win over Beaumaris.

Beaumaris, batting first, were restricted by the Murrumbeena bowlers, falling all out on the last ball of the innings for 146. Leadbeater (52) and Mutton (40) led the way for the home side, with some handy runs in the tail end coming from Earney (22). Kruger (3/24 off 8), Guruge (2/20 off 8) and Ryan (2/32 off 7) all played their part with ball in hand.

Completing an all-round performance, Kruger showed his class with the bat, making 80 off 78 balls and leading his team to a victory. Murrumbeena passed the required total seven wickets down in the 34th over. Earney (3/17 off 6) led the Beaumaris bowlers, who put up a strong fight to stay in the game, falling just three wickets short in the end.

In Division 1, McKinnon emerged victorious from their top-of-the-table clash with Mentone, bridging the point gap between the two.

Sent in to bat, McKinnon made the most of their opportunity, overcoming the loss of their openers early to post a total of 7/192 off their overs. King (79) batted perfectly in the middle order pulling the side from 5/93 to reach their total, continuing from the good work of O’Shea (40) at the top. As for the bowlers, Edgeworth picked up handy figures of 3/34 off 8.

Cormie (37) and Walker (20) got Mentone off to a strong start, reaching 55 before the loss of the first wicket. After Edgeworth (18) fell at 2/93, the Tigers struggled to build and maintain partnerships, and eventually were dismissed for 183 in the 39th over. King backed up his innings with the bat, taking 5/23 off 7.4 overs, undoubtably earning man of the match honours.

Brighton District bounced back from last week’s loss, defeating St Brigids St Louis thanks to the handy hitting of Andrew Lasky.

Batting first, the Dragons fell to 2/8, before Lasky (78) and Jones (26) were able to combine for a 75-run partnership to get things back on track for the home side. Laskys innings of 78 came of 87 balls and included four sixes, with his classy knock leading the way to the dragons posting a total of 9/202. Barker picked up 4/47 off 8 overs for the saints.

In response, St Brigids St Louis struggled to get going, with the flow of runs stemmed by wickets falling consistently throughout the chase. The Saints finished their innings 7/137, heavily restricted by Gordon (2/18 off 8) and Gould (2/25 off 8).

An important win for the Dragons who sit in fourth place on the ladder, hot on the heels of McKinnon, Parkdale United and Mentone.

Parkdale United continue on their winning run, defeating Clayton District to remain in second place, just one-point shy of top spot.

Batting first, Parkdale United stumbled to 3/30, with the loss of their consistent contributors Ravesi and Shanmugan for single figure scores. Once again showing their depth, the Pythons bounced back, this time in the form of a 128-run partnership between Amon (76) and Marsh (72*), who steered their team to a total of 5/171.

Continuing their momentum between innings, the Pythons put immense pressure on Clayton District with the ball, dismissing them for 99 in 33 overs. Marsh backed up his dominant performance with the bat to pick up 3/14 off 7, with Shanmugan also picking up 3/19 off 8.

Parkdale take one step closer towards the top four, with a thrilling win over Dingley.

With a chase on their hands, Parkdale started strongly, with both openers, Das (52) and Elmi (51) reaching half centuries to put the two-blues into a winning position.
